Autism Awareness: Remembering Uncle Chris

Yesterday would have been my Uncle’s 63rd Birthday. My amazing Uncle Chris was autistic, and I had the pleasure of being his niece for 22 years. He lightened up any family gathering, brought light to my life and definitely made me a better and more well rounded person. It has been almost 3 years since we lost this incredible man and this post is more of a tribute to him than anything, as well as creating awareness of autism and what it is.

Understanding Dementia

Tomorrow is my Grandma’s 89th birthday. As I’m settling down to watch Bake Off with Mum (bring on bread week!) I remembered how I would drive the 5 minutes to my Grandma’s house every Tuesday to watch it with her, a special time I’ll never forget. Now, she is in a lovely care home about 15 minutes from us, as her need for round the clock care became more prominent after her dementia diagnosis. It can be hard to grasp when someone doesn’t remember things, is confused easily and may not even know who you are, which is why I wanted to understand dementia more.

Travel vs. Career – do you have to choose?

This is a question I ask myself a hell of a lot. Do I try and excel in my career, climb that ladder and earn enough to lead as comfortable life as I can? Or pack my bags, book that ticket so I can explore the world some more before I feel the tick tock of my body telling me to settle down and act on my maternal instincts? I bet it’s a question we’ve all asked ourselves plenty of times. Do I really need my job? Should I just quit and leave this all behind? What is it that I actually want from my twenties/thirties/and so on?
